The Mulling Spice Quilt was my first magazine pattern submission in late fall, 2021. With the prompt of "Warm & Cozy" for an Autumn edition, I first thought of being curled up in a warm quilt, reading a book and drinking a Caramel Apple Cider. As a result, I designed the quilt around what is traditionally in a Mulling Spice.
The pattern didn't make it into the magazine. I was a little disappointed but I soon realized that it was just too much for a magazine! I quickly overcame the rejection and moved ahead with the pattern design. The Mulling Spice quilt is a sampler quilt as it has appliqué, curved piecing and traditionally pieced blocks. I designed it as a lap size quilt so it can work as both a quilt or a large wall hanging.
This pattern is perfect for the fall season, the holiday season and even into the winter season, making it an extremely versatile pattern. Make it for yourself, or as a gift for anytime during the holiday season!
TESTER VERSIONS
Jessica Watson @drwatson8 made a beautiful version with mixed reds for the cranberries. I love the look of that since cranberries aren't all the exact same color!
BACKING FABRIC IDEAS
When I was making the Mulling Spice sample I just happened to find the perfect backing fabric. I used Autumnal Spice from the Art Gallery Fabrics Season & Spice collection.
I've found some other fabrics that I think would go beautifully for the back:
Christmas Potpourri, The Nutcracker Snow or The Nutcracker Cozy by designer Katerina Rocella from Art Gallery Fabrics Wintertale.
Trinkets by designer Louise Cunningham from Cloud Nine Fabrics Sanctuary.
Fall Light Blue Plaid Flannel from Joann Fabrics and Crafts.
Holiday Cider Ingredients from Fun Sewing Winter Wonderland Collection.
Apple Cider and Stars from Fun Sewing Apple Cider Collection.
